Busting Through Our Barriers and Breaking Out of Our Boxes
Do you scream inside at the thought others see you as a stereotype, a one-dimensional figure who neatly fits into the box that typifies your age, your sex, your preferences and your ethnicity?
Candace Parker is one woman who emphatically refuses to accept any prejudicial constraints imposed by the ignorant or the malevolent.
Candace is a bona fides sports champ, a double-Olympic basketball gold medallist, a two-times Women's National Basketball Association winner and a two-times college basketball champion.
But it’s not these accolades that make Candace so inspirational.
What makes Candace exceptional is her determination to apply the same excellence to every facet of her life. Whenever she meets a situation where conventional wisdom says it can’t be done, or shouldn’t be done, or people like her are incapable of doing of it, that’s an invitation to burst through the barrier.
Listening to her, it’s clear Candace inherited her disdain for social limitations from her family, and in turn, she’s instilling that same attitude into her daughter.
The question for us in the Retire Better community is, do we despise the box that society has assigned for people aged over 50 the way Candace despises any attempt to limit her aspirations or achievements?
How hard are we breaking the stereotype that its “Game Over” after age 50 and the best thing we can do is sit quietly in the corner, and most especially if we’re the ones locking ourselves in box?
Busting social norms that limit and categorise people should come easily to us, as a generation we’ve been doing it since the 1960s.
It’s now time for us to assault ageist attitudes that think we’re too old to start a new career, too dumb to learn technology, too boring to go onto the internet, too lazy to get fit and too self-satisfied to make the world a better place.
It’s wrong, wrong, wrong, and just like Candace, we despise the lanes that others want us to live our lives.
We’re so much more than could ever fit in a box.
