I started a successful business in my 60s… and you can too! | Margaret Manning | Sixty and Me

At Switched ON Living, our reason for being is to speak about our wellbeing, and we do that through the lens of our physical, emotional and intellectual health.

But there’s one aspect to wellbeing that’s severely under-reported for people aged over 50 and which we at Switched ON Living want to champion – entrepreneurship and enterprise.

It’s a fact of life that money makes the world go around and that there’s a strong correlation between income and savings and our quality of life.

Many Switched ON Living members are financially very comfortable, and for them the challenge after reaching 50 is to continue to find joy, wonder, excitement, fulfilment and love in their lives.

Other Switched ON Living are less financially secure, and for these folks we want to bring great hope.

There’s a new wave of entrepreneurs who are aged over 50 and who are capitalising on their skills and experiences to start a business and take control of their lives.

There’s an idea that entrepreneurship belongs exclusively to the young. Wrong!

Take the example of Margaret Manning. As she tells us in this video, at age 60 she founded the Sixty and Me online community.

Five years later, her community seems to be thriving. Margaret says she has over 700 members just in her Patreon community, and certainly the Sixty and Me website looks as good as the best of them and Margaret’s YouTube channel is full of great content.

The advice she offers in this video is simple enough – the skills and life experiences of people aged over 50 are highly transferable to a business setting, seek out mentors even if there’s a cost involved, proactively learn the skills necessary to conduct business today such as digital technology, conduct proper research about your business idea.

But the strength of this video lies much more in Margaret’s example, and in her bravery, her determination and recognising her business skills.

And she’s not the only one, as the research from the Kauffman Foundation proves.

Entrepreneurship in people aged over 50 – it’s a topic we’ll be talking a lot more about at Switched ON Living.
