The second half of our lives – making it every bit as good as the first half
One of our Switched ON Living free resources is the Retire Better Myths – Switched ON Living vs. Traditional Retirement.
The idea of the Retire Better Myths is to highlight common misconceptions about retirement, falsehoods such as our biggest concern is running out of money, or that retirement is a single stage of life. It’s not!
Life after aged 50 is a series of stages, mostly dependent on our health. And speaking of our health, that’s the biggest concern for most people, not their bank balance.
Another pervasive idea that Switched ON Living was specifically created to contest is that our lives past aged 50 are second best. The perception is that we’re at our best when we’re young.
Well, at Switched ON Living, we think otherwise. And to help us argue our case, we’re joined in this video by Lloyd Reeb. Lloyd is a very successful businessman and he did something highly commendable – he sat back and thought about his life after success.
The result was the Halftime Institute. As Lloyd explains in the video, the Institute encourages people to use the skills they’ve learned in the first half of their lives to give back to their communities in the second half.
After tens of thousands of hours speaking with Institute members, Lloyd says one of his most profound takeaways is the deep sense of satisfaction that participants get from the mentoring relationships they form, satisfaction that is far more meaningful than they enjoyed from their business successes.
There’s so much in Lloyd’s presentation that resonates for Switched ON Living members. Just like the people who participate in the Halftime Institute, Switched ON Living members also share three common traits – we’re clear about who we, our strengths and our passions; we’re disentangled from the unrewarding obligations that are holding us back; and we’ve started our second-life passion projects.
As Lloyd says, traditional retirement is out for us. There’s no meek meandering into a dull and insular existence for Switched ON Living members. We have far too much to offer and far too much to experience.
